Health Effects of Coal Dust in a Non-Occupational Context : Literature Review Introduction

چکیده

Whenever coal is stockpiled and, particularly, when it is transported, dumped or otherwise handled, there is the potential for release of small particles (i.e. dust) of coal in significant quantities. The range of sizes of these particles is considerable; visible coal dust (i.e. as a black cloud) is one extreme of the possible range of particle dimensions but within any such dust cloud there will be a proportion of particles which have dimensions of 20 μm or less; this is generally referred to as Total Suspended Particulate (TSP). Further, within the TSP fraction of total airborne dust, there will be a proportion of particles which are of respirable size. While there is no precise cut-off point which delineates whether a particle is respirable or not (particle shape and associated aerodynamic factors are also relevant) the dimensional arbiter of particle respirability is taken to be 10 μm or less (the so-called PM10 fraction).

Dust concentrations and respiratory risks in coalminers: key risk estimates from the British Pneumoconiosis Field Research.

To help inform the setting of dust control standards in coalmines, this brief review summarises the most recent and reliable exposure-response relations, for damaging respiratory effects, derived from the Pneumoconiosis Field Research (PFR). Collecting data over 38 years in the British coal industry, this was a programme of prospective research on the respiratory health of coal miners, characte...

The effects of Eucheuma cottonii on alveolar macrophages and malondialdehyde levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in chronically particulate matter 10 coal dust-exposed rats

Objective(s):To investigate the effect of Eucheuma cottonii on alveolar macrophages (AM) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) in particulate matter 10 (PM10) coal dust-exposed rats. Materials and Methods: Ten groups, including a non exposed group and groups exposed to coal dust at doses of 6.25 (CD6.25), 12.5 (CD12.5), or 25 mg/m3 (CD25) an hour daily for 6 ...

Immigration, Participation in Health Services and Social Occupations: A Literature Review

Introduction: According to the World Health Organisation ‘participation’, meaning involvement in everyday occupations, has a positive influence on health and wellbeing and lack thereof can lead to negative health consequences. Occupational therapy scholars believe this phenomenon needs exploring with attention to context. Variability is apparent in the way participation has bee...

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied e...
